Wekipedia is huge and has grown faster than any other site on the internet. Rumors have it that they are going to compete with Google and become the worlds first human edited search engine.
I noticed this today – http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Fundraising which is their fundraising campaign, and so far, they have 14,307 users that have donated.
They state that with $200 Wikipedia can be made available to developing countries through DVDs, books and pamphlets. $100 pays for two Wikipedia Academy events in Africa. $60 sends three students to the annual Wikimania conference and for $40, they can offer 100 million page views of free information!
They also state that donations of these amounts will not be restricted to the activities described, but will be put into the general Wikimedia operating fund.
I’m going to predict that Wekipedia will start offering ads not too far off, perhaps in the next 12 months – Just my two cents
