    G’day Jim,

What you have done here is just brilliant and full marks to you for this fantastic contribution you are and have made. You deserve whatever success or accolades you seek for your efforts.

There is a slight but important problem in that it is not particularly clear what you get out of this, and this will tip off the cynic in any of us older farts. I came here in response to a Google re a program I saw running in task mgr that I suspect could be a trojan and I have been massively distracted from that quest. However, that is OK as I am very happy to have discovered and then promote your site as you wish, once I am convinced it is fully legitimate.

Consider the alternative – what a brilliant scam, masquerading as a security expert, obviously very smart / knowledgeable, and easily able to dupe people into clicking on buttons and running stuff for gawd knows what sort of personal advantage. And the words you use do not allay this POSSIBLE scenario – the only benefit sought is more traffic – of course, says the cynic. Apart from the lack of clarity of purpose when this is clearly a critical aspect there are little red flags like the tools and forum are on different domains, why is it so?

Now I know there are good reasons why you could be doing all this, and they don’t have to be purely for the altruistic benefit to society (I like to do a fair bit under that heading myself, but I ain’t playing with core security stuff!) – but the only way people like me are going to be convinced is to hear a legitimate explanation from yourself, and to see easily that genuine credible independent referees exist. I have certainly seen this sort of site creating the facade of apparently but not really independent referees for their own software so I can’t help thinking this may just be a cleverer way.

However, it is much more likely that your motives are honorable (the optimist in me says, because I’m in deep sh..t from those speed & pop-up testers otherwise!) and you just haven’t paid much attention to this stuff. If, as I hope, that is the case I think you should (and probably do) have a good idea how you can make money out of this as you deserve to, surely it is not just via the donation system you have in place? I have seen a very coherent explanation of the benefits of providing free software to a large number of people, it is that 0.5% of them want to engage you for related purposes – and half a percent of a really big number is still a pretty damn good income, is that what is going on here?

    Thanks for clearing this up.

Good day to you Vince and welcome to the forum!

You are cautious, and wise to do so, but I can assure you that the site is safe. I put countless hours into these sites and give freely of my time, and I can overlook your inability to recognize the complexity and security considerations of running ASP and PHP on the same server.

AuditMyPC.com is 100% coded by me and by doing so, I am most confident in the security of the site. If something happens, I can figure out the problem pretty fast.

The forum however, is not coded by me, but rather a third party. It

Thank you for your courteous reply Jim, I suspected that is where you were coming from and I mean no disrespect whatsoever by asking such an apparently churlish question. I do believe the topic needed dealing with, and you have responded in a way real people will understand. Very often the written word is so manifestly inadequate for proper communication, but I believe the world is basically broken up into people that A) "get it" and B) those that don’t. You are obviously in the A Team, thank you.

Re "your inability to recognize the complexity and security considerations of running ASP and PHP on the same server" you are exactly correct, I have other failings too. Fortunately, recognising and striving for balance in life is not one of them – although achievement of it can be a little elusive at times.

Probably these posts don’t belong in this topic, please feel free to tidy them up to somewhere like "Why am I Doing This" or whatever you think is the fair thing, I won’t be offended. Thanks again for finding time to put this stuff out there for the community to benefit – I had put the Spam trap up before I asked the q, by the way – as I am an eternal optimist myself, hang the consequences!

    All the best ………..Vince

Nicely worded Vince – I do try very hard to converse in terms that everyone can understand. Too often, the written word, no matter how hard you try, does not even begin to convey the true message that only the expressed word can deliver.

We all have failings – I apologize for using the word ‘inability’ – I put a lot of time into my work, have made some incredible sacrifices and can choose the wrong or inappropriate word when a question feels abrasive.

If you have achieved balance in life (moderation), then you are a very fortunate person!

    Best regards,

    Jim.
