Why is it that when I test my speed using other tests, the almost always show that I am getting far lower speed than what I pay for but with your test, it shows that I am getting exactly what I am supposed to be getting?

I just installed your broadband speed test on my web site and I have three issues/questions. The URL is www.trendata.net/speedtest. It is hosted by Earthlink.

The download test runs Ok but the results are only half the speed I get when I run it from the Audit My PC site. Is this normal?

The upload test gives me an "Upload Error". The permissions are 0644 on all files. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t get this error when I run the test from the AuditMyPC page.

On the image that displays the test the credit text at the bottom right overlaps the box containing the ad above it partially obscuring the ad.

Couple of months back i had no problems with the wireless speed, but now from couple of days i started having the problem.
Iam unable to upload any files via email thru yahoo/gmail and when i try the speed test from this website (

download shows close to 4816 kbps but for Upload it gives a error saying client cannot send/recieve packets to the server port 8600.

Upload and internet work fine when connected via wired netwrk.
Is there a problem with the wireless adapter, or router?? but others who use the same connection dont have any problems.

Hello, Just downloaded and started using your speed test program. We need to be able to test speeds on our LAN with speeds of 100 megs Up and Down.

How can I set it so that it will

1. lengthen the test? The download is reporting around 55 megs down, but only takes about a second to perform the test. The upload test is reporting approximately 18 megs.

2. report the proper speed of the network? and

3. display graphically on the site the speed of the test?

Two of the Speedtest files won’t load on my PowWeb directory. Is there a workaround? Thx

OK, I thought it was only on my site, so I try the 2 different test several time on Audit My Pc’s website . but with same result.

I have read, that the test should be the same, but with the result above, I have to move it from my website again! It’s not working accurately!!

Apologies if this is a stupic question. I recently got myself a 1024 Kbps connection (WIMAX) from a Provider named Tata Indicom Broadband in Bangalore, India. I have since tried to perform many downloads and have never reached speeds greater than around 600 Kbps (around 75 KBps, that is).

I recently came across the auditmypc speed test and performed a test from http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp and was surprised to see a result of 1515 Kbps download and 534 Kbps download. This is more than double of what other speed tests show.

Even Tata Indicom’s own speedtest link at speedtest.vsnl.com/speed shows be a download speed of around 664 Kbps. So, I am left scratching my head now as to which speed test I should rely on as the accurate one.

I eve tried a normal download from microsoft and saw that I only hit around 650 Kbps.

Can someone help throw light on this discrepancy?

Questions from a WP newbee: OK, have the files in my main WordPress directory. (Your latest instructions said they should go in the directory where the page is — should they go in the Theme directory?) Also, not sure where the code goes — do I create a sidebar text widget and copy in there? Or does it need to go into the sidebar template CSS? Tried both and neither worked.

I copied and paste it on to the sidebar of my blog page and all it dose is says loading, but it never loads. I submitted the code to blogspot support to see of i could use it on my blog. They told me i could but there were errors in the code that will prevent it from working right. But they did not tell me what errors were. the speed test in the zip file i can’t use on my blog site.

If you install the ASP speed test or PHP speed test and get an ‘Upload Error!’, then you are probably missing the upload.php (or upload.asp if using ASP) file. Once that file is in place, your speed test should run fine!

The tool is being used at smartaaryan.brinkster.net/speedtest.htm. I have already sent a request today to activate this page.

I am using ASP 3.0 for scripting. I have uploaded all the files except MS Access database which I do not want to use.

However,I want to record the test results – upload and download. I am not able to do this. Logger.asp doesn’t seem to be creating the text file which is supposed to be created.

I am sure this may not be something complicated.Am I missing something?

When using the speed test over a wireless connection, is there anyway to know how much dedgredation is caused by the wireless connection.

For example, from a wireless PC, is there a way to determine what the speed is:

• From host to wireless router
• From router to PC via wireless
• And overall from host to PC

I have just discovered your site & used both the broadband speed test & Internet speed tests.
I created a desktop shortcut to your page so that I can easily retest in future.
I have a cable connection, used IE7, based in Queensland Australia, OS=XP Pro+SP3.
Some questions if I may:
1) Broadband test Dwnld spd @ approx 530 kbps.
Int spd test Dwnld spd @ approx 420 kbps.
Tried each twice & variation between type of test is significant but why?
2) Can you please indicate the size of the test packet, where it was located, & any other (important) node info.
3) It would be great if I could save all the relevent details in a simple log file – at the push of a button so to speak. That way I could play with tweaks, & best times, to check for improvments etc. Is this sort of development on the horizon?
4) Does the type of info transmitted effect speed?

However I cannot install it on my blog – which runs in Google’s Blogger.

As you say in the instructions "The tricky bit for blogs". Too right it’s tricky: in Blogger there is no such thing as (quoted from instructions):

Go into your profile options by clicking on Users, Your Profile, then look for ‘Use the visual editor when writing’ and unselect it. There is no "Users Profile" in Blogger and there is no "visual editor" anywhere in "settings".

I just wanted some clarification on what kind of credit you want, and where you want it.

Did you want a link to that URL or a different one?

Additionally, this is really just a temp design and things may be moved around some. Would it be OK to move the credit to a different page, and if so, do I need to update the activation information to reflect the new page in order to avoid being put on the "rude list"?

I have download the speedtest (flash) with php code. Unfortunatly the place where I host my original website does not support php of asp files. I must put all my php files on an external hosting service. Will I be able to get the speed test working properly. I inted to be using iframes on my original site that is pointing to the hosting server for the php code. Any thoughts on this, I am still waiting for my account activation, which I hope will come soon.

I’ve put 1.04 and 1.05 side by side on multiple tests and found 1.04 to be almost accurate on every run out of 30, while 1.05 is always miles off the mark by a good 30 to 60% or so. I get the same problem when trying the tester on this site and other sites using the same test, likewise using a different browser makes no difference.

Is there any way to go back to v1.04 since that seemed to do the job far better for some reason?

Is there a difference between the Speed Test (dual column graphic) and the Broadband Speed Test (dashboard graphic)? The Speed Test won’t run for me. It say "Connection refused: connect" when I click the start button. My browser is Firefox, my ISP is Comcast, and I connect using a wireless connection through a Trendnet USB adapter and Linksys WRT54g router.

I know this has probably been asked before, but what is the difference between your broadband speed test (flash) and the internet speed test you ask users to take first. I get two different answers, one of which, 1796kbps, agrees with my speedtest on a certain site, while the other, 949kbps, agrees with my speedtest on a different site. So how do I know which is my real speed?

Is it possible to change the text under the "Home User" and "T3 or More" buttons? We are a DSL provider and it just doesn’t make much sense to have "Cable or Less" show up when they mouse over. Having the ability to change this would be usefull. Even the ability to customize the "Home User" and "T3 or More" themselves would be nice.

Let me try and explain the problem, please bear with me. I have a client who is blind (I am a IT volunteer), he uses a screen reader called JAWS and it tells him whats happening etc on the screen, he has a 8Mb connection and Jaws told him he was getting 7.2Mb, ever since he has installed IE7 it has dropped to 2.2Mb, his ISP insist he is getting the full 8Mb, he has uninstalled IE7 and gone back to IE6 but still it says 2.2Mb, when he ran a couple of speedtests last night, most came up with the 2.2 Mb result. Question: is it possible for the ISP to test more accuratly the speed and do we believe them? Thanks for reading.

Java – ~9000k down / ~500k up
Flash – ~400k down / ~500k up

Does this speed test actually run locally? In otherwords I am looking for a speed test we can run from local servers to test bandwidth. I don’t want it actually leaving our network to run the test. If it has to "phone home" to authenticate that is fine.

The test has been working just fine from the get go… even BEFORE submitting the verification request, which I did same day of install.

Well, this blog is actually one I installed and set up for a client and I check on it once a week. YESTERDAY I popped in for the weekly check to discover the speed test had ‘disappeared’ – POOF!

I REinstalled the files, I REembedded the code into the post page. I tried everything, including standing on my head while rubbing my tummy and whisteling a tune… but no joy.

I did notice that the client must have removed the backlink I placed TO you. Perhaps doing that, she poked around on the page with the wysywyg editor ON… don’t know.

I’ve not only replaced the backlink to you IN the post. But I’ve now added another backlink to you in the sidebar, which will show on every single page. And I’ve instructed my client in the proper ettiquette of giving backlinks and credit to those whose tools or content she is using for free.

I would ‘virtually’ kiss you if you would help me get this test fired up again.

I wish to know what a web visitor’s download speed is so I can steer the visitor to a small or large Quicktime movie.

It seems that I can never get upload speeds over 4Mbps. Is this because my account is probably not activated yet? I have tested over 100Mbps connections, from different routed subnets, the same subnet, directly connected via a cross-over cable, and for every test the download and upload speeds never reflect the true nature of the connection. Occasionally, the download will state 60 or 30 Mbps but mostly 10Mbps.

Any ideas?

I am trying to get the flash version of the speedtest to work but I am having an issue with it showing me an innacurate up speed. I used your tool on your website and it showed around 1900 on my up but when I try the one on my apache server it only shows 758k to 1000k. I think it is an apache or php config issue I just dont know what to change. I have increased the php.ini upload size to 99M with no change.

I have registered the site and location with your webform twice (now three times) and everything works fine except that twice now the test just stops executing at your flash call. This seems to happen at random times and once I send you a reregistration the test mysteriously starts functioning again. Now when I attempt to run the test off our test platform from a different url on the same server it works just fine.

We have preserved your logos and have a direct link back to your site on each and every page presented on our site (credits on the bottom of each page). So I’m open to any ideas why this has now occurred twice without any error msg or anything…the page just stops at your call and then ceases execution.

I’m going to be moving to another country, so I’ve been looking up broadband providers. My main problem is that I don’t UNDERSTAND how fast broadband goes. Everything that I look through in google doesn’t explain to me how fast the other connections will be compared to what I have now. All the terminology and stuff just doesn’t click.

One question/request: Our users don’t necessarily know whether they have a high-speed or low-speed connection. Is there any way to "disable" the high-speed half? To start the test, the user would just click "Start the Test" or something like that?

I realize the results wouldn’t be as accurate. And then again, we could just make the .jpg image the same size, and it wouldn’t matter which button they clicked to run the test…

I am concerned with the accuracy of your speedtest. My speeds on the average are 7500kbps down and 440kbps up on the test sites I use. When I run the test here I get about 5400kbps down and 1400kbps up.

On one of my sites www.deltamusic.afraid.org I have a window that has some of the test that my isp (Mediacom) uses. I have only run the test from AMPC an not from any on users sites. I would like to try from some other sites.

I have downloaded and installed the PHP Version of the Flash Speed Test.
The download speeds appear to be correct.
The upload speeds though are very slow and not accurate.
I have tested this with a PC that has a local Lan connection with the Web Server and for example,
download speed is 21.7 Mb per second
Upload speed is 2014 Kb per second.
As this is a local Lan with no firewall etc to cross, the speed results should be about the same.
I have the same error if I use the speedtest from a remote PC. The upload speed is a lot slower than it really is.
Any help would be appreciated.

I just have 2 questions for you.

1) How do I view the log of the stats? When I browse to logger.php it just gives a blank page. Is there some admin area or something?

2) When I tested the speed test on my own web host, the results were really slow compared to the speed test that ran on your site. Does that mean my host is slow on upload/download? I want to give the user the most accurate result so I’m guessing I have to find a good host thats fast.

When clicking Low Speed, it tests your internet speed fine.

However, when clicking High Speed I get a Download Error and it never tests the speed.

I made sure that both downloadcable.jpg and downloadbroadband.jpg are on the site but I’m not sure what the problem is.

I currently implemented the Free Broadband Speed Test on my website. It went up easily and the download test worked wonders.

However, it hangs on the Upload test. It gets done with the download test and at times immediately gives an Upload Error warning. The other times it just takes much longer to reach the same Upload Error warning

The speed test page had this comment, "The (DSL) speed tests are based upon the assumption that the upstream bandwidth is lower than the downstream bandwidth."

So, since my network connectivity is symmetric with down/up speeds then the broadband test would not be able to determine the correct bandwidth for upstream?

Currently our 512/512 (down/up) package for fiber to the home customers gets results like this 626/383, 675/135, and 645/127 from the same customer.

Also, would the the symmetric settings we are using be the reason that the flash bandwidth test for downloading takes longer to complete than the test for uploading?

This is my first post here but this is also the first and only forum i’ve ever seen dedicated to broadband speed.This is supremely important to me(hardcore gamer) and for the life of me i cant get my connection optimized because all the tools i use to optimize the settings dont give me the best ones and i dont know what the proper settings are.

I just got this freeware called "Zilla connection accelerator" and it rocks because it has all the settings and gives you the easiest way to adjust them yourself but now i cant figure out what those settings should be.

My dsl service provider says im paying for 3616 upload and 640 download but i cant never get that last 500 on the download or that last 120 on the upload.

When an Internet users uses the flash speedtest located on my server, Are the results showing the speed between his PC and my server?

Or is the test using a auditmypc server and than reporting back the speed from the user PC to the auditmypc server.

I’m having trouble with download errors on my website.

I have checked to be sure all files have been uploaded.
I read in another thread about this that the poster got his download section working properly simply by re-uploading the .jpg files.

Unfortunately that didn’t work me.

By the way, I’m using the Flash movie version.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

I’ve just installed the broadband download test on my website, and I’ve got to say it a fantastic piece of software.

I have one question regarding the logging files, I want to limit the number of tests per user to say 10 in a 24hr period, are there any instructions on how to do this.

I have been using this speed test for a while now and it is the most accurate i have found.
But over the last few weeks i keep getting the above message and wondered why this would be.
I use IE7 and if you need anymore info please ask.

I ran two of your test on my Wireless Internet Connection.
I think there is something wrong in either speed test, because they both show totally different results for downloading speed. Whereas for upload speed both shows the result near each other.

These are the results for Java based Internet speed.
Download Speed: 4206 Kbps, Upload Speed: 380 Kbps

Results for Flash based Internet Speed
Download Speed: 1196 Kbps, Upload Speed: 385 Kbps

These download results vary too much, difference of 3000 Kbps. So does anyone of you have idea what is the problem.

Hi, I’m with an ISP that’s impressed with the Broadband Speed Test and would like to use it. We’ve installed it at http://support.tigertech.net/speed-test, but it needs activating.

I’m probably just being dense, but although it says "drop me an email with your website’s url and the location of my credit so that I can activate your speed test", I’m not seeing the correct e-mail address, so I’m posting here. Apologies if that’s incorrect.

I tried the speedmeter_z.jar. It is really interesting software. I got some results but I could not understand. Upload speed is always aroun 28.000-33.000 KbpS. I changed the upload server or increase the data bytes but almost no change. It is an ethernet network and I wonder if it is possible to get more realistic results.

Here information and bug fixes for the flash speed test.

The latest version (1.06) was updated on 11/18/08, so if you have a version before that, you’ll want to download the new version found here:
broadband speed test

The page above will provide you with all the instructions you need to install this application. Basically, just unzip the file contents into a subdirectory on your server and you’re all set. Simply visit that directory and the test will run.

Note: All the files in the zip file will need to be in the same directory as the page with the speed test in it.

Update History:
8/11/08 – Removed the requirement to register and trust that you’ll give me credit should you decide to use the test. Speed test can now be run on an internal or external network.

Combined all files into one download file.

8/2/08 – Improved accuracy for high bandwidth connections.

7/23/07 – Speed test accuracy fixed – will work the same on all systems (depending on what you have using bandwidth at test time).

5/8/07 – Updated the logging of results to a file or database. New design.

4/10/07 – Upload bug with sites serving the flash speed test on high speed connections (ISP’s, etc). The speed test would report upload error. This has now been fixed.

4/1/07 – Initial release (Beta)
