and Do you have to have two network cards?
I’m assuming that you place this device between your router
and your server, with this device with two network cards one
for incoming traffic and the second for outgoing traffic!???

The instructions for setting this IDS up seems to be very clear.
But how you you install the box?

I am running a program called winpatrol and learning to use it, in the start up section I found this start up

wanting to know what it is, I came up with information that this is a bad thing to have running in my computer… the thing is that no spyware, no antivirus scan had detected it before… the only place I see it is in this winpatrol section… I disabled it to prevent it to start up… but I need to get rid of this

hi folks

i encountered a real problem. one of my sites has been deactivated by my hoster since it’s been used to send phishing mails; so i controlled and really, there was a file in a subdirectory named "re.php". what is curious about this is that this file was in a sub-sub-directory named "..". now the questions:

how can a ".."-directory be created since there is always one existing already?

how did this file (re.php) get there?

what can i do to avoid this once and for all?

i’d be grateful for any clues asap.

Currently I’m thinking of backing up my work data to online storage so that I can access my data and do my job from (virtually) everywhere in case something happen with my local data

My system is an old laptop with win98se installed on it. I want to setup a direct connection to the online storage and not via browser. Browsers seem to have a bad attitude of transmitting more ads than valuable data and it’s mean more cost to me.

I have tried iDrive but their setup program is designed for NT/XP system. The other sites I came accross require NT/XP system too. I have tried googling with special keyword "for win98se" but the result pages are crowded with NT/XP enthusiasts

Is there any free online storage with setup program designed to be friendly to win9X ?

Thank you for helping me find some holes in my surfing security. I have added Firefox’s NoScript extension as a result of what I have found on Audit My PC.

I have had to disable your IPSec policy and wonder whether you can help me enable it again. With this policy assigned, I cannot download RealPlayer files from blueletterbible .com. When I unassign the policy, everything works as it should. Is there a setting that can be changed to allow RealPlayer files without defeating the purpose of the policy?

I recently installed Blink Personal (eEye digital security) and about a week later, today I restarted the laptop with a bit of an issue, and Blink’s security prompted me of "An application attempted to send a UDP datagram".

This happened before I had full control over the desktop, despite it having filled in, systems tray icons as well.

Also, the issue I had starting up is one I’m (for now) laying off as likely due to failing laptop battery or maybe it’s the CMOS battery, maybe neither).

Ever since about 2 months ago, it seems that about half my startups are balk, requiring me to unplugg the AC and disco the battery (I find that pulling it out and immedaitely snapping it back in some 30 times, and then plugging back in the ac, only then will the thing startup.

I’m leaning towards the issue as an intermittant lack of continuity between one of the battery’s numberous contact points as the laptop ‘lives’ on a well de-humidified boat foe about 4 yrs now, but they all look fairly bright and clean.

The power indicator light stays off (pointing to a full charge state) and the manual backs up that assumption, plus the meter popup lists the battery as 100% charged and capable of a mx 4 hr use.

The battery actually seems to be performing just fine as it’s charge bleeds off at a rate very nearly what I recall it doing when new.

As for my recently trying out hibernation (for a few weeks, then I stopped as I couldn’t manage to interpret and resolve the event ID errors).

I don’t recall just when the startup issue began, but I think not long after or maybe just after trying out the hibernation process.

Anyway, today when starting up it did it’s usual (as often as not) balking at startup, I did my usual thing and except for my having overlooked my ‘PlugnPlay’ USB external HD still connected and online (when I’d shutdown), as soon as the desktop filled in, I got a Blink firewall prompt (‘asking’ for my decision for the following).

Likely this’s just comptuer babble which pought to be telling the user that ‘hey, I think you left a HD on and the laptop needs to re-confirm files and what-nots’, but if that’s not waht’s happening there, I’d sure like to know that too.

I’d reasonably expect that if it weren’t the fact that I not only have excluded all my EHD’s from system restore, but moreover I have no progs on the EHD, just vobs, jpg, and assorted other media files.

I probably could have found an answer to this elsewhere, but I just didn’t have any idea where to look, so suggestions are welcome.

Ok, what I want to know is what makes a computer safe or not? Is it the browser, the operating system, or the physical computer?

In other words, If I run Safari (no flaming) on Windows XP, do I still need anti-virus software?
If yes, what about if I’m running Windows on a mac computer?

Just found this great place and very new here. I was extremely interested in the Proxo. I downloaded and gave it a try but had some problems. Although it did seem to hide my internal ip address it didn’t seem to hide much of anything else. I also couldn’t seem to sign in here while using it. I would get a page that said I need to add it to the whitelist.

I should mention that while reading the info while getting familiar with the Proxo, I noticed it didn’t mention Vista at all. I’m running Vista premium. Ya think maybe that’s part of my troubles? I do have another XP pro machine. I guess I should give it a go on that.

I also read many of the post here concerning Proxo and found that by simply disabling Java and Java script seemed to hide the same amount of info as using Proxo. I also noticed my page loads slowed some but that may also be lack of tweaking with the Proxo.

Seems like this could be a great little program if I can get my head around getting it setup correctly. As it is now I’ve left the java and java scripting disabled and run without the Proxo.

Any help would be appreciated.

I heard that windows xp service pack 3 is coming out. My question is if you upgrade your xp sp2 to sp3 is it possible that your current files and application will stay or it will totally gone like a fresh install in os?

I switched from AOL dialup to Wildblue satellite. Theres a website chat room that I was able to use with AOL but cant with Wblue. Wildblue is using port 8080 and the chatroom is to so Im not able to enter chat anymore. It attemps to load but doesnt. A guy Port scanned my PC and said that Wildblue using 8080 and the chat using 8080 was causing a conflict. Do you know how I can work around this so that I can enter chat again?

I am using awstats for 2 years and there have not problem in hit counts up to 3 days.. Awstats do not count hits for 3 days. I do not take any error messages but when I look at stats for this mounth in daily format There is no hit for last 3 days.. Could you give me some idea about why it do not work? My logs archive is about 3gb, so is it be problem?

I’m a reg on the Help forum at Neopets.com, and for the longest time people have been going on about ‘cookie grabbers’. As far as I’ve seen, virtually no one outside of Neopets has ever heard of such a thing. The general idea is that someone can take over others’ accounts by leading them to an external page containing javascript which ‘grabs’ the users’ neopets.com cookies which are then decoded (there are supposed to be programs for this, though I can’t seem to find any, and aren’t they encrypted one way?) or substituted for the scammer’s cookies.

The problem I have with this concept is that, as far as I know, no browser since IE4 has allowed a domain which does not own a cookie to request it. Am I correct or misled here? Should I go on telling people that cookie grabbers don’t exist anymore?

(There were a couple of cases in which people successfully used on-site javascript to do this, but the exploits were quickly patched, and javascript has not been allowed on user-customizeable pages for ages).

I had a question about internet privacy/security I was hoping someone much more knowledgeable about technology than myself could answer. I know that companies can monitor internet usage and sites visited on company computers and the government seems to be able to do the same on public computers, such as in a library. My question is whether potential employers or for that matter the government itself can legally monitor where a private citizen goes on the web in their own home on their own personal computer? I know this is a Post 9-11 world but still, some realm of privacy would be nice. Thanks.

hi – i’m trying to find a decent elite proxy that doesn’t record, store and share your personal information and browsing history. I have looked at several of the most popular programs, but after reading their privacy policy, discovered that they all log and pass on your personal data with third parties, and the government if they request it.

It seems fairly obvious that we’d be better protected if all personal info and logs were shredded as soon as they were generated, of if they weren’t stored at all. if you’re paying for a service, surely you should be able to expect total anonymity and data protection?

Anyway, if anyone could recommend a service with a decent privacy policy that doesn’t insist on sharing your data with the whole world, i’d be very grateful.

I’ve discovered that there’s a Local Security Policy within Administrative Tools in the XP Pro control panel. However in XP Home w/ SP2 Local Security Policy is not Admin Tools. In fact there is no SECPOL.MSC in an XP Home Sys32 directory, as there is in XP Pro.

How can I add ipsechome.ipsec to XP Home security policy?

I need advise, for several weeks i have problem with my pc sort of
i am connected on drytek vigor with other 2 pcs. And when is one of this pc`s turned on I have all the time incoming connection via lan from that pc also my pc wants to connect on it. It dont matter if i allow it or deny it still pops in. I thought its virus so i runned avast full scan and it was clean. So i installed spybot he found some minor tracking cookies which were deleted but nothing serious. but it continued so i installed ad aware in hope it will clean it whole he found something and deleted it and now its everyhting clean with this 3 softs, but nothing changed. we runned same checks on other pc aswell and cleaned everything and we have still same problem. I am using kerio firewall.
And I am really getting lost what it can be. Can someone point me what it can happen?

It is a politically oriented site and I have always abided by their rules. (They are similar to yours.) In the past they used typekey so when I was blocked I merely changed my user name. Now they have a box where you read the image. The reason they are blocking me is because of my political orientation and not because of foul language or deviant behavior.(As much as behavior is discernable over the internet.) Anyway, my opinions count too and I was wondering if you could offer any hints or tips on how to become "unblocked".

Here’s a long standing problem I’ve had if you have the time to solve it.

If I double click on the time at the bottom right of the OS (Millennium), I get the error message " An error occured while Windows was working with the control panel file C:\WINDOWSSYSTEMTIMEDATE.CPL . I think I need this file uncorrupted becuase when I put in the application recovery disk I get an error saying the recovery CD is not intended for the language and country of this computer. Maybe you could show me how to change the language and country set for my computer.

When I do a search for time date.cpl I get

choose the cabs option, save the cab copy of timedate.cpl to a folder on the desktop, move the timedate.cpl file in System to the desk top, move the cab copy to System, restart the computer, I still get the same error timedate.cpl. error.

I copied the text into a txt file, saves it as newtime.reg ans as "all files". A while back I tried to put the .reg file into the registry but now I’m afraid to try again becuase this method is not said to be for Win Millennium. I couldn’t find one that was.

Today’s puzzle! Having downloaded and assigned the recommended IPSec policy file from AuditMyPC site I have 2 problems. 1. From within BBC.co.uk I can no longer use their ‘listen to radio shows that you missed’ (Player never connects successfully). 2. Skype will not make a connection. Thanks.

Having been away from my PC for about 3 weeks, I come back and fire it up. It works fine until I do a restart to get the accumulated Microsoft Updates. While installing them it crashes big time. Can’t get it to load OS (XP Home SP2). After many unsuccessful tries I finally get it back up using microsoft’s "How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting" (KB 307545).

Finally its loading XP and running, but a little slow and sluggish. The only program that won’t run is a microsoft game (RalliSport Challenge) which was loaded by my son from a bitTorrent hijacked version with some sort of patch. I tried to use the game’s uninstall file, but computer would just lock up totally. Could only be cold booted to get it back up.

I tried a System Restore but still locks up. Then went to my backup files and restored my system state from my backup done 3 weeks ago. This ends the locking up but Uninstall gets stuck on the initiallizing step and won’t do a thing, but at least I can shut it down with task manager without locking up machine. I decide to start deleting all files associated with RalliSport Challenge, and get it down to just three small folders: Archives, Locale, and Server. Can’t open them, but when right clicking the mouse to try a delete, after few minute pause, I get messages "Cannot delete archives <or server, locale>: The directory is not empty."

I tried all steps to take ownership of the folders but to no avail. Also took a look at the Event Viewer and it is full of "Event ID 51" warnings for each time I tried to access the three folders. The detail says "An error was detected DeviceHardisk0D during paging operation."

Not sure what all this means? Any help or referral to another forum would be appreciated.

I cannot log on or enter the site it says that "Network Error (tcp_error)" or " it leaves blank "… By the way, I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.7 as my browser and tried also IE 6 but still got the same error…

I’m facing an annoying problem, to which no-one seems to have a solution…

From my own PC, I can’t view my own site (not the main domain, nor the sub domains); I get a server time out every time I try to load the URL’s.
On any other machine, the sites display without any problem.

I can’t connect with my FTP client either.

I have other sites, with other hosts, but the problem only exists with sites on that particular hosting account.

I’ve been in contact with my webhost, but they can’t fix the problem – the say the problem is with my machine. Unfortunately, they can’t give me any more info.

Clearing the cache doesn’t work and disabeling Windows firewall won’t work either. I have no extra firewall on my machine.

Is there anyone who can help me out here?

I am getting crazy things when I click on the shift key to enter things. It is repeating characters and letters that I have not entered. This appears as I am using Firefox and Q

how is it that someone gets my ims sent to their cell phone and all my screen names even when I am online and my cell phone is the mobile registered. This person has never and I mean never been near my pc and 2 techs checked it out its clean, What is going on? Is it the person i was talking to being vicious ? Whoever and how ever this is being done they even copied (changed some of the convo) and printed and sent to me . the police won`t help they said just stop talking to person …..but you know what its still harrassment and i just want to know how it is done sso that I can stop it. I have made new screenames and each time this person gets into my stuff . Even though i don`ty talk whoever still sends texts to person with lies …so dammed if i do or don`t . I have been reading state laws and now know they have to hel;p me ,but I want to be able to tell them that there is a way to find out who so I won`t accept them saying just don`t talk anymore. I’ve recently installed mobile broadband on my home pc and everything was working fine. Until last night I downloaded about 10mb of video clips / music from the net, when i logged off after 45 minutes, the usage summary told me i had downloaded 177mb!

I’ve logged on several times since, and even if i log on for just 2 minutes to view one web page, it tells me i have downloaded 5 or 6 mb?!

When i go to Windows Task Manager – Performance it tells me i am using 16% of the PC, when in actual fact i am not doing anything.

Is this likely to be a virus or something downloading itself? I have McAffe internet security and that tells me all is ok. What can i do to stop this?

I just figured out how to use PHP to reduce a template to a number of references to PHP files. It’s OK but I’d rather do it a different way. Isn’t there a way to have a template on the screen and when a link is clicked, the page doesn’t reload, rather the area of text the viewer wants to read changes to the information the viewer chose (by having clicked the corresponding link). This way the template loads only the initial time and the template contains a bunch of references to a bunch of files of text, one of which the computers would fetch when a link is clicked. That would be very efficient.

For example on my site, the text is found in the middle column for each different page of the site. If one of the links in the right or left column is clicked, instead of reloading the template with the chosen information text (aka "going to that page"), why not leave the template there, don’t reload the template, and when the viewer clicks a link, load the text the viewer wants to read into the center column. What language would I use to accompolish this and what would be the enabling function(s) of that language that would accompolish this?

I have used the anonymous test twice in recent days and have found that although the IP identification is correct the site map indicates a totally diferent location to mine. Like 800klms away.
The first time was Smithfield in Sydney and now Woy Woy on the central coast of NSW.
I am located in in the Northern Rivers area of NSW Lismore area.
Does this mean that Bigpond is doubling up on my account?
The reason I ask this question is that I have seen unprecedented usage on my account this month, in fact my account is 400MB over the 500MB allowed in only 10 days into the monthly period.
I run vista home premium, mcafee and do not believe that I have any trogans etc. on my pc.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I want to write my page where I can change the template and all the pages will change. Can one do that in CSS? I have some software that will convert my HTML to CSS. Would it help to covert the html template to CSS, then write my pages as plain pages with reference to the css temple. Or, am I going to have to give PHP a try

What causes a white border to appear around a page with apparently no code? If I type a letter (i.e."b") after <body> the letter shows up in that white border. I don’t see any coding for it in my code, it just spontaneously appeared. Is there some setting some place for this?

Question about embedded web browser
I noticed sometime ago when checking my stream logs oline that I am using an "embedded web browser" Below is a snippet of what I see.

Have checked and is not a proxy issue I never downloaded or installed software from bsalsa.com

Can anyone tell me where I can find the SYSTEM aspi drivers (4.71) for Windows XP Pro? I need all four(4). aspi32.dll, winaspi.sys, wnaspi32.dll and wowpost.exe. if you have a site that you are confident in, please post the information so I can retrieve it. I installed NERO 7 Ultra and I have the Nero aspi drivers but not my system aspi drivers. Nero acts really funky without the system aspi drivers and I am making more coaters than I have cups. This is probably not dangerous, but I’ll ask anyway. Sometimes when I shut the PC a message appears saying (the message is in Finnish so I cannot write it quite as it should be in English, sorry) : Someone else is using this computer. If you shut it, something will be lost (or something like that). Do you want to shut Windows anyway?
This is scary and embarrassing. Why do I get such a message? We have only one PC in the house.

I am looking to convert a WMV (windows media file) to a SWF (flash) file and have not been able to find any software or tools. I have found many swf to wmv conversion utilities, but that is not what I’m looking for.

Can you recommend a conversion tool? Is there something free on the internet that I can use? I would also like the ability to do a batch conversion of wmv to swf is possible.

I sure hope I am posting this in the right place. I have a pretty large wireless network that services 60 (maybe 5 on at a time) guests. I am curious to how I could set up my own ISP. Nothing fancy, just a centralized and secure local environment for my users to log on through and then be presented with the company’s website at initial access. They do not need to be charged or anything, I just thought I would play around with it a bit. I currently use Linksys equipment, high gain antennas, and with an amped up cable connection and a DSL connection with both on separate SSID’s and on different gateways. The network shoots between a couple buildings where I have access points set as wireless repeaters. What can I do to accomplish this?

Im a bit new here, and I’m starting my own website.

Now off the top of my head, To customize my website, I thought of an ingenious idea, I think..

When someone visits my site, their I.p. is recorded and the country is also recorded. So then into a session cookie, AND into the My Sql database their I.P. along with their Country of origin is recorded. And a few things change in my website. Like Price, the money is automatically changed. The language and all.

Since you guys were the I.P. experts, I wonder if anyone can help me in this?

I have AOL and i keep getting this bubble telling me new AOL Connectivity Services are available and update now to install. I can’t get rid of it. Please help me get rid of this thing.

I was sitting at my PC tonight with the headphones on and I heard some audio suddenly come into my headphones.

The sound was just background noise, similar to the sounds you would hear if you were on the phone to someone and that person wasn’t talking. But I did hear the person making some sounds, like breathing and slight movements. I could not hear any typing though.

I immediately suspected a hacker had gotten into my PC and unbeknownst to them their microphone was sending their sounds through to my PC. That’s what it seemed like, although I have never heard of this happening to anyone before.

It lasted about 10-15 seconds then just stopped.

I do have Skype running in my system tray, but I wasn’t in a call. I was playing BF2 (an online shoot-em-up game) about an hour earlier and it has a built-in chat service but I had exited the game. I know my system fairly well and there wasn’t anything running which would have warranted such a sound.

Within a few seconds of this bizarre incident, I went to the command prompt and typed netstat -n and saved the screencap.
For those of you who don’t know, netstat -n is a DOS command which lists all the IPs and respective ports (local and destination) connected to your PC at that very moment. You can try this yourself by clicking Start>Run, then type "cmd", click OK to open the DOS window, then type "netstat -n" press Enter.

The results were varied, a few ‘established’ connections on ports other than 80 (for example, ports 17368, 39765, 30853). A trace on the IPs gave Russia twice and Italy once. I am in Australia. From experience, a netstat -n will show connections from the last minute or so. If that’s the case and it was a hacker, I definitely have their IP at least.

I have done a few searches in Google for anyone else who had experienced this but found nothing helpful.

So, my question is, what the heck just happened?

Hi had a doubt,
We r using a Oracle 10g in our application server win 2003.
We had installed Check point firewall. 10G works in the port 7777.
In the past the trojan and viruses were using the port 7777.
Is there any remedy for that.

Silly me! I accidentally entered my IP address to have it blocked from amp.com (auditmypc). I got distracted and had the "firewall test page" open on the tab next to it. Was late and not concentrating.

I spent I don’t know how many hours, trying to find a solution: Since a week after start up, but also in the middle of a session there is a message popping up (in Dutch, my native language) that reads as follows (I try to translate it properly): ‘There is no disk in the station. Place a proper medium in the station’
At that moment I maybe serving or wordprocessing and not burning a disk nor are there any disks in my CD drives. If I put a blank disk in, nothing happens.

I have been reading a lot of Forums on this site, but could not find an answer. Maybe this is a stupid question, but I really cannot find an answer.
Would it help if I reformatted and re-installed XP? I would not be very happy with that, of course!

I’ve run into a big problem – lost Java for no known reason, reloaded several Java at keast 5 times, checked for viruses, found that I lost Firefox which somehow appears to defaulted to Mozilla I that I romeved over a year ago. Found that my broeser is still listed as Mozilla "HTTP_USER_AGENT=mozilla/5.0r" shouldn’t that say Firefox …" When I hit About on the browser it no longer says Mozilla and says FireFox, should my web browsing be read as firefox – I’m not sure I’m really running Firefox which makes me worry Java will still not down load properly. THE REASON why I am worried about this is that now that I supposedly reinstalled 1.5.0.7 (Firefox), when I visit yahoo I don’t the usual Yahoo fron page Home Page I get Why miss out? To see all the new Yahoo! home page has to offer, please upgrade to a more recent browser." An lists FF 1.5 ( which I supposedly have listed) and if you click on 1.5 It takes you to FF 2.0 which I don’t want becuas it’s very slow.

( eg ) At the the start of marta network it did not ask for a network key an it worked fine, now marta network are asking for a network key and i can not connect .

We have dowloaded a software and have install it.
Software is so big in size (up 600 Mb). That we need to deinstall it to reconfigure our system disk (C , when we procceed we receive following message :

Warning 2005 Save all user date and settings ….

We have presently no back up features to back up 80 GB.

Would be dangerous to proceed to desinstall process ?
