Ping test

I’ve been testing my PC at grc.com. I’ve got Norton360 installed and running but when I tested my ports in the Shields Up I fail the Ping test. I’m not a techie – could someone please help me pass the test.

    I don’t use GRC, I prefer AuditMyPC.com’s Firewall Test but I

Actually, my problem was that my PC was responding to the Ping Test. The result was positive which meant that I failed the test.

I did the test before when I was with different ISP. That was when I was using a modem and had Norton Internet Security 2006. I scored 100% then with no response to the Ping test. Now my current ISP has given me a router and with Norton360, I failed the test because grc.com tells me I responded. I suspect this is because I have a router instead of a modem. I’m not sure how to get the router to shut up. Should I ask my ISP or should I be bothering Symantec instead?

What type of router did they give you (model number, etc)?

    Netgear DG834GT-1SKUKS

  5. AMPC says:

I believe that the Netgear DG834GT router has a few options that you can configure, such as the ability to disable port scans and responding to pings from the internet. Perhaps your router was given to you with these options turned off?

Disable Port Scan and DOS Protection The Firewall protects your LAN against Port Scans and Denial of Service (DOS) attacks. This should be disabled only in special circumstances.

Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port If you want the router to respond to a ‘ping’ from the Internet, select the ‘Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port’ check box. This should only be used as a diagnostic tool, since it allows your router to be discovered. Do not select this box unless you have a specific reason to do so.

You can check these options by logging into your Netgear DG834GT. You can do this (I believe) by connecting to the router by typing ht tp: //192.168.0.1 in the address field of your browser.

A login window should open asking your for your administrator username and password. The default for the netgear DG834GT router should be admin (for administrator / user) and password for the password, unless you changed it.

Check that out and let me know what the settings are. If they are configured properly, then there is no way a computer from the outside should be able to ping your netgear!

    Best regards,

    Jim.

Thanks for all the help Jim. I’ve sent you a lobster card (I think) – not sure if I’ve done it right but I’ve got a receipt from paypal anyway.

    i had same problem
i disconnect from internet too many times
i check Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port this box.
    its work fine
    for a week
problems comes up its happen for month
what should i do to that work properly

  9. AMPC says:

Turn off the respond to pings option.

I’m guessing that when you have problems, you have not used the computer for a time, correct? If so, they could have changed your IP address and the way around this is to have your computer grab something / visit something on the internet more frequently – this will send traffic from your PC to the Router and the your ISP will not (likely not) release your IP.

Let me know the amount of delay between uses.

    Regards,

    Jim.
