Default wrong map

Hi,
I hope this is the right place for my question. I was reading The anonymous surfing page which showed my IP address and its map. The map was completely wrong, I don't live there at all. Why, I wonder?
Thank you.

Default IP Map not always accurate and here is why...

The map will map out the location of your IP address and is usually right on.

Here is what is happening. The cable company will assign you an IP address, but that address will not be public until you go through their router onto the internet. That router could be located far away from your home location and in such a situation, the address will reflect the location of that router, not your home PC.

I am just curious, how many miles was it off by? Correction - I should say how many miles away is their router from your home

Best regards,

Jim.

Thank you for the explanation. The distance is about 60 kilometers.

Default wrong map?

hi asteri,

looking on your nickname and since you're talking about kilometers, you're not going to be a frenchmen, are you?
if it is so: HI DUDE!

as jim said, the city shown (and consequently the resulting map) is the city where your ISP-router is located. there are many sites delivering different cities, depending on where the informations are being "harvested", RIPE, APNIC a.s.o.

regards
