JAVA Fatal Error

Help please -

Spent the last week reading forums on errors Java Runtime Environment cannot be loaded and several Java Virtual Machines running in same process. Tried lots and lots of suggestions without results.

Errors occur with -Xmx512m parameter everytime and most of the time with -Xmx256 parameter. 256MB is not enough for a site of an estimetad 180,000 URLs.

I use IE7 and Windows XP SP2 with 3GB RAM on a Dell computer.

Any thoughts on this problem would be most welcomed.

Thanks,

Terry

    Hi Jim,

I tried reinstalling various versions of Java with the best result being able to load sitemap generator with a low memory parameter once or twice without IE hanging and going through the same process again. Loading Java with IE tools by itself allowed a larger, but limited, memory parameter and many repeated loads without reinstalling Java.

With Firefox, I couldn’t get the generator loaded a single time regardless of memory parameter.

Among many other trials, I tried the temporary workarounds listed in Java.com help section without success. Results were the same as described above and short lived except for reducing the multiple virtual machines errors.

Somehow it seems Java is only using a small part of RAM. Don’t know why.

    All ideas appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Terry

    Hi Terry,

Do me a favor, remove any memory settings, then go into the sitemap generator and click on the System Tab (next to URL check). Click on the Collect garbage tab, then look at the top left corner of the page. You

    Hello Terry,

I had this exact same error myself last week and decided to uninstall all of Sun’s Java, then reinstall and it solved the problem for me.

You can also try it with firefox? I have seen many times that it works fine on one and not the other.

    Hope that helps!

    Regards,

    Jim.

    Hello Jim,

I appreciate your time looking at this.

With no memory settings the generator shows Free Memory: 5.59M, Total Memory: 12.6M, and Max Memory: 63.6M. Is this about normal?

The largest setting I’ve been able to use was -Xmx256m after reinstalling Java
    and several attempts to load.

I have attempted higher settings of -Xmx384m, -Xmx512m, and -Xmx768m. None have worked after an abundance of attempts.

Out of desperation I even did a clean install of Windows in case it wasn’t managing memory correctly for some reason. No improvement.

Don’t really know what to try next, but I’ll keep looking for a solution.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

    Thanks again,

    Terry

If you have got the -Xmx256m, then under Memory Usage, Max Memory, you should see 256 within the sitemap applications System Tag.

When you stick in -Xmx256m, do you see that?

What do you see when you use -Xmx128m?

My responses are slow, I know – My multitasking skills are at their limits

    Best regards,

    Jim.

I would have gotten back to you sooner, but a takes a lot of attempts to load the generator with the -Xmx256m setting.

With -Xmx128m the generator shows Free Memory: 5.34M, Total Memory: 12.0M, and Max Memory: 127M.

With -Xmx256m the generator shows Free Memory: 5.79M, Total Memory: 13.0M, and Max Memory: 254M.

    At a loss,

    Terry

    Hi Terry,

Thanks for taking the time to test. Everything is being reported right and I have no idea why this is happening for you.

It appears that you have tried everything I can think of and I’m out of ideas. I hate to say that, and it’s the first time I’ve said that, but I currently have no other ideas.

I am working on a new version of the sitemap generator that will prevent having to modify Java settings, but I still have a ways to go.

If I think of anything else, I’ll post.

    Regards,

    Jim.

    Hello Jim,

    I appreciate your efforts.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that under the systems tab http: agent shows Windows XP SP1. I have SP2 Media Center Edition currently installed. Don’t know if it matters.

Also, I have now disabled some services from starting up and installed JRE 1.5.0_13. I can now run with 384MB fairly consistantly which helps a lot.

If I ever run across a resolution, I’ll post it here.

    Thank once again,

    Terry
