My ISP ( a satellite provider ) has his "home" customers under a private IP address and natted to the edge router.
The ISP antenna on my house is connected to my Linksys wireless router ( with rangebooster) that then goes to the computer.
I have a security system with cameras and viewing software ( Q-see) that I want to be able to monitor remotely thru the internet..the security DVR is also connected to the computer.
I have tried, with the help of the Q-See tech support people as well as the Linksys people to do the port forwarding required to be able to view remotely but it will not work. My ISP says that because I am behind the private IP address that it’s not possible to view the cameras on the internet. He suggested that I get them linked to a private website ie that I PUSH OUT the images as opposed to trying to COME IN to view them. Thats all the help he’ll give me.
This is a problem since in order to view the cameras the viewing computer needs to have the viewing software installed on it and I don’t know if you can embed this software on a website.
Is there a way to get around the private IP to view my cameras? Is there a way to get my private IP address and port forward it?
I am just a civilian and not a techie so ANY help is appreciated.
Thanks

Let me throw out a few ideas:
You could have a plain Jane site outside of your network. It would be one page, and at the bottom, it would a link to the software for the user to install it.
You could have something like snagit running that would capture a region every few second (minutes, etc) that would ftp the image to an outside server. That server would look to the ftp image file for content and would look like you are view the real thing.
You could use an open source monitoring software for your hardware (if possible) and get around the limitations.
You could set up your PC to be the server, then have the capture software write the image to your local drive and serve it from there.
I’m guessing there is a way to do what you want, but I have not used your setup. If you know the ports being used, you can do just about anything

can you recommend any webcam software that even if its using private ip, it can view and be viewed by those that are under public ip?thanks…
You are going to need a router of some type. If you have a webcam hooked up to say 192.168.1.100 and you have a linksys (netgear, etc) router, then you can tell the router to forward packets to and from your webcam.
Just look for a webcam that has an internal configuration option (such as IP address, etc) and then hook it up to your router.
Did you have something else in mind?
Regards,
Jim.
thanks for the reply..
what i have in mind is that if there is any webcam software that supports directly a private ip address to view and access those webcams that are in public ip and vice versa, and at the same time tracking down or registering the ip address of the viewer without the use of any port forwarding or NAT in the router.
by the way, i am considering the webcam softwares ‘camLAN’, ‘ActiveWebcam’, and ‘H264 WebcamPro 2.32′.
any added help on assessing these softwares would be deeply appreciated.
thanks!!!

I have not used these before, but if you find one webcam performs better than the others, please provide details!
Best regards,
Jim.
