Google or Not to Google

Jim,

Was updating my sitemaps with your sitemap Generator. Worked great, maybe a little to well for Google. I noticed the times for my different pages to load were very long, eventhough the KBs are pretty low. My clean.html page is only 18kb yet if I understand the stats correctly, it took 10 seconds to load. I owe it all to Google analytics. I’m thinking about getting rid of G.analytics code on my pages. It’s nice to see my numbers, but I think it’s costing me visitors. My webhosts version of awstats comes up with some mysterious numbers sometimes, atleast I don’t have to pay for it with visitor patience. What do you think?

Thanks Jim,

Roger

I too have thought this, and usually Google is right on the mark, but when their servers are slow, it can make a webpage slow as well.

I am torn on this and I rely on Awstats for many of my bigger sites, but use Google analytics on some of my smaller sites.

I had a site that sat at the number one spot for years and after adding Google analytics, it drop from that spot. Was it Google analytics or just bad timing?

But – now that you bring it up – I am going to take Google analytics off that site and see if it makes any difference. I highly doubt it, but…

    Regards,

    Jim.

    Jim,

I’m sure everyone reading this forum wants to know what you find. Please tell us what you find in a month from now. I’ll remind you November 7th or so.

You know I spent an enourmous amount of time learning HTML and CSS on my own to reduce my template as much as I did and I think it was all lost to G. analytics.

    Thanks,

    Roger

    Jim,

Is "get t" on your sitemap generator the get time – how long it took for the server to deliver the page in seconds?”

    Thanks,

    Roger

  4. AMPC says:

Yes, that is the time it took to get the page. It all depends on from where you are running the sitemap generator.

How did your site do without Google Analytics? More visitors?

    Hi Jim,

As Roger is wondering about Google Analytics, I am too. Did you get a moment to test this?

    Thanks,
    Loretta

    Hi Loretta,

Placing the code on my site did slow things down but I couldn’t measure the impact on visitors, so I can’t be of much help.

I use Google’s Webmaster Tools for most sites now and simply place the meta tag identifier on the main page and then view stats using their tool.

This is working well for me.

    Best regards,

    Jim.
