Forum help

Hi Jim
I was wondering if you could recommend a resource in creating a forum? The reason I’m considering this is that I live in a small community which is now starting to grow and we ( the residents ) have no way to communicate our thoughts , ideas and complaints other than attending a city council meeting. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Gregg,

I sure can – ask yourself this question, do you want a forum or a blog?

A blog is great if you want to direct the topic – you pick the topic and people comment on it. Management is easy and WordPress works awesome for this – easy to install, easy to manage!

A forum is great if you want people to have more freedom to talk about whatever comes to mind, you can try to set the direction, but management can be time consuming.

is by far the best forum software on the market! It’s not free but security updates and patches are frequent. The downside is that it’s not an easy package to learn and tweaks can be tricky!

There are free forums out there that work great and also keep up to date on software and patches, but from all the research I did, Vbulletin was the best.

There is also a which is a lightwieght forum made by the same people that made WordPress. You can use it as a standalone solution or integarate it with wordpress.

I am a big fan of WordPress and have created a number of sites with it – it is free, easy to use and tons of support.

I am in the process of converting a city’s website to a wordpress blog. This will allow citizens to leave comments on projects and enter complaints while keeping them on target. In a city, an open forum could turn turn south real easy, so a blog will work best for this.

Hope that helps give you a few ideas.

    Jim.

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info. A blog is a great idea that I didn’t consider, and is obviously much easier to manage, etc.

No problem Gregg, and if you need help setting up a wordpress blog, don’t hesitate to post – just make sure you host it on your own server!

    Best regards,

    Jim.
