first time questions

hello,
Just found your site and am about to download free sitemap gen. and set up and had 2 quick questions, any help much appreciated
I am based in Australia and my site is
Swags Half Price, Original Camping Swags, Best Swags Direct Since 1972 (a swag is a an Australian quick all purpose small tent)

Where it says I need to keep my browser open for this to work on your page…

* Reminder * *
Both the Sitemap Generator (Google) and Site Mapping tool (Yahoo Generator) depend upon your browser staying open; if you close it, the sitemap program will stop and you’ll have to start over…

Does this mean I need to keep my computer on as usually at night I turn it off and occasionally I turn it off when we experience electrical storms and lightning
and if I do turn it off does this mean I have to recreate a new sitemap and also advise google each time I turn on the computer?
and if so is it a simple enough process to just start it (the sitemaup each time I turn on the computer.
My freqency of web page alteration is usually daily as I post about 1 article per day but if it will work easier can set frequency to weekly.

2. Wher I set the importance of each page can there be more than 1 page with the same setting eg 0.2 or does each have to be different

Cheers
Stephen

    Jim,
Really apprecialte the quick reply and the help.
Sorry if this souns stupid but on your free site map it says…

The other, newer type of sitemap is the Google Sitemap. You use our Google Sitemap Generator (located at the bottom of this box) to create a file which you then upload to your web server. This is NOT for humans to read and you don’t link to it from any of your web pages. Instead, you log into Google Sitemaps and tell them were your file is located…

So when you say my browser needs to stay open is it only while I am setting all this up or does the browser need to stay open even after the file is uploaded to my server and Google is advised, does Google have to come to my computer first?

Thanks for taking the time to help with what must be obvious to you.

    Stephen

P.S I went to the link sent after joining your web master tools for your new google sitemap gen. …

Google Sitemap Generator – Free Site Map Builder, Create EASY

and it sent me to the same page as

    websecurity.mobi/sitemap-generator/

    ?

Hi Stephen and welcome to the forum.

I sent you a private message with the location of my new webmaster tool. Also, get on the new developments list: Security Information – I’ll be changing the url and you’ll need a password to access the tool soon. It will still be free, but only to those on the list.

Anyway – I ran your site and it tool less than 10 seconds to spider everything. You have one error swag-of-swags-index.

At this time, I do not have an automated way to generate the sitemap, but I’m working on this, so stay tuned.

The browser does have to be open for the webmaster tool to work.

It should take you less then 2 minutes to spider the site, save the file and ftp to your website if all goes well.

Also – a tip if you don’t mind. I noticed that your title tags on a number of pages are the same (you’ll see this when you run the webmaster tool). Change those and you’ll get a much better ranking! I didn’t look at your meta tag descriptions, but change those as well if they are the same. (they can be the same as the title of the page they are on, but not another page).

    Your load times were great!

As for page settings on the Google sitemap – there can be more than one at the same importance setting, such as .02 or most important, 1 (main page).

    Hope that helps,

    Regards,

    Jim.

    Excellent question Stephen!

I’ll revise my documentation. You only need to keep the browser open until you save out your sitemap (until the sitemap generator has finised creating your sitemap). Once the sitemap has been saved out, you can close the browser and upload your sitemap.

The sitemap application is linked to the webpage and I’m trying to say that if you close the webpage, it closes the application as well.

Does that help? Perhaps you have a better way of wording it? If so, please suggest!

    Regards,

    Jim.

    Thanks Jim,
    Big help much appreciated
I understand that as long as I keep my wep page up and running with my server it will be able to be accessed by Google

    Hi Stephen,

The application only need to be open to spider your site, then you save the file to your computer – Then, you can close the webpage / application.

You don’t need it open after that.

Once the sitemap file has been created and saved to your hard drive, you’ll then need to place it on your server (upload it), then notify Google Sitemaps of the location.

You do not need to keep my application open in order for google to see the sitemap.

So – you only need the application open long enough to finish creating the sitemap file – that is all.

    Perhaps that is more clear?

    Regards,

    Jim.

    Jim,
Not sure whether I sent reply from private message correctly so have posted it here.

    Jim,
    Many thanks.
    Quick question.
I generated a sitemap and uploaded then submitted to google all ok with the new tool but I have just gone and tried to generate a new sitemap as I have added /links.php to my website www.SwagsAustralia.com
Only thing is I can’t seem to generate a NEW sitemap,

    auditmypc.com/free-sitema…ator.asp?N=New

I click on the icon "Sitemap Builder", get the pop up, type in my address then hit "start crawling" but it says it is terminated and the timer keeps counting?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Stephen
P.S I got thinking about what you are doing and what a great service you are offering. You know that I think heaps of people would pay you to do an installation of both the google sitemap and the other one on their website and maybe you could optimise their site for SEO by
    1. cleaing up the deadwood
    2. making sure it is all spiderable
    3. Cleaning up their meta tags
    4. Advising them on a simple strategy of 1 good link per day and 1 good article per day posted on their site plus 1 good article sent out by someone like Article Post Robot (which you could get affiliate on)
I know that even when you offer something as good as what you have here for free people would still pay you to do it for them
Don’t know if this is of any interest to you but I think it might be a way to make you some money?
    Cheers

Let me know if you want to brainstorm happy to set it out in more detail

    Hi Stephen,

I just finished removing the old sitemap generator that you were using and the old site map tool that was designed just for sitemaps.

Each of these tools have had their functionality built into the webmaster tool. The new webmaster tool is the tool to use.

Try this, then let me know your results.

I appreciate your comments about my service and thank you for the suggestions! They are great ideas, but my time is extremely limited and already spread too thin.

By helping out free, I can do this on my time as time permits. If I performed services for money, I would then be on someone else
